WAKEFIELD, MA— MelroseWakefield Hospital honored its Chief of Cardiology Dr. Salil Midha, MD, this week for his 43 years of dedicated service to the hospital, to colleagues, and to thousands of patients, not only in the region, but across the globe.
Dr. Midha would now become Emeritus Chief of Cardiology at MelroseWakefield and will continue his roles as Director of AMS and Co-Director of Cardiac Rehab and quality programs besides caring for patients in his practice and in the Cardiovascular Center at the hospital.
As a leading community cardiologist, Dr. Midha’s work has been transformative in the delivery of advanced heart care and services.
Dr. Midha, who began his career at MelroseWakefield Hospital in 1981, has spent the last 43 years innovating and developing the region’s top community cardiovascular center. His contributions include helping to bring the first cardiac catheterization lab to MelroseWakefield Hospital more than 25 years ago and establishing the area’s first cardiac rehabilitation program.
Evidence-based research shows that cardiac rehabilitation significantly increases the chance of survival in the five years following a heart attack or bypass surgery by about 35%. These services ensure the delivery of a higher level of comprehensive cardiac care for patients locally.
Dr. Midha was recently recognized as a Healthcare Pioneer for his contributions to the field of cardiology as a physician serving as President of the Boston Cardiac Foundation, a non-profit organization that brings medical technologies and services to less-developed countries around the world.
Under Dr. Midha’s leadership, the Boston Cardiac Foundation has placed nearly 1,000 pacemakers to people in need in India, Africa and South America. Foundation members have performed thousands of lifesaving heart operations over the past 30 years.
