MARLBOROUGH, MA–Mata Amritanandamayi, or ‘Amma’ as she is more commonly known, return to New England on July 8 and 9 in Marlborough, MA, organizers said in a statement

The statement said that Amma has transformed the lives of countless people, helping their hearts to blossom, one embrace at a time.

“If you attend one of Amma’s free programs, one of the first things you will notice is that people come to Amma from all religions and all walks of life,” the statement said.  “In Amma’s arms many describe experiencing a feeling of radiant and unconditional love. Some are moved to tears and feel a cleansing of old wounds; others experience profound peace and even joy.”

During the past 45 years, Amma has physically hugged an estimated 39 million people from all parts of the world.

“You are invited to experience Amma’s unconditional love in the form of a personal embrace when Amma returns to New England on July 8th and 9th at the Best Western Royal Plaza in Marlborough, MA,” the statement said.

Amma’s tireless spirit of dedication to uplifting others has culminated in a vast network of charitable projects in 40 countries around the world. In September 2013, Amma launched Amrita Self-Reliant Village (Amrita SeRVe) which included the adoption of 101 villages across India to teach villagers the skills they need to build prosperous and self-reliant communities. Because villagers are the providers of most of the nation’s food supply, these steps can lead to a sense of community and gratitude throughout the entire country.

“Villages are India’s foundation—Her very life force—and it is society’s responsibility to take care of them. In fact, it is our villages that sustain us by providing us, who live in cities, with the nourishment we need in order to survive. It is time to acknowledge that our villages are our very foundation and move forward with one heart and one mind to protect and serve them” says Amma.

As part of the initiatives undertaken by Amrita SeRVe, health workers, educators and other volunteers work with local village coordinators to:

  • Monitor immunizations for children and vaccinate pregnant women
  • Conduct adult literacy classes
  • Help individuals—especially women—open bank accounts, avail of social-security schemes and form Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to become financially independent
  • Design and build low- cost water distribution systems
  • Train women in the basics of plumbing, masonry and construction skills to build toilets in their communities and become self-reliant.
  • Teach young children basic hygiene such as hand washing and bathing
  • Teach farmers organic farming and crop rotation techniques and help them apply for land deeds
