New DelhiUnion Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday emphasized that external pressures, including the newly implemented U.S. reciprocal tariffs, would not cause panic among Indian citizens, asserting that the Indian economy remains resilient despite ongoing global uncertainties.

Speaking at the Rising Bharat Summit in the national capital, Shah acknowledged that it is too early to assess the full impact of the U.S. tariffs but maintained confidence in India’s economic strength.

“It’s too soon to determine the impact. India is not the only country facing tariffs—several other nations are affected as well. Perhaps our goods can be redirected to other markets,” the Home Minister told attendees.

Shah added that U.S. tariffs are a complex issue, and it would be unwise to make any hasty judgments. He reiterated that India’s economy is resilient and reassured the public that such external challenges would not trigger widespread concern.

Earlier, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India is working with the U.S. to secure exemptions from President Donald Trump’s 27 percent reciprocal tariffs.

India has also reached an understanding with the U.S. to finalize a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by the fall of this year. According to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, New Delhi remains committed to solidifying a trade deal as the long-term effects of the U.S. tariffs continue to unfold.

“We decided to engage the (Donald) Trump administration early on regarding these issues. We approached the discussions with openness and constructive intent, as did they. As a result, we agreed to aim for a bilateral trade agreement by the fall,” Jaishankar said during the event earlier in the day.

Following bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump in Washington, D.C., in February, both nations announced plans to negotiate the first phase of the trade deal by fall 2025. (Source: IANS)
