“Hey, That’s Mohini”: Madhuri Dixit Recalls the Exact Moment She First Realized She Was Famous

The Bollywood icon revisits her early days of stardom and the unforgettable airport encounter that marked her first brush with fame

MUMBAI — Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit has reflected on the exact moment she first realized she had become a household name, recalling a memorable airport encounter following the success of her breakthrough film Tezaab.

Appearing on the classic chat show Rendezvous With Simi Garewal, the actress said the experience unfolded shortly after the release of the 1988 hit, when she was still coming to terms with sudden public recognition.

She described arriving at the airport and being unexpectedly recognized by people around her — an early glimpse of the stardom that would soon define her career.

“The first taste of success was when I landed at the airport,” Madhuri recalled. “And I came out, and there were these little street urchins who clean your car, and suddenly one of them said, ‘Hey, that’s her, 1, 2, 3 Mohini, Mohini,’ and they came running, and I was like, gosh, I got recognized.”

She added that the moment became even more striking when she was asked for her autograph for the first time.

“And I signed my autograph for the first time after people recognized me from a movie,” she said. “And I was like, okay. And I signed my name, and a little kid said to the other, ‘Look, I told you, it’s Mohini.’”

The actress, who made her debut with Abodh in 1984, went on to become one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated stars, delivering a string of major hits including Dil, Beta, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Dil To Pagal Hai, Ram Lakhan, Tridev, Thanedaar, Kishen Kanhaiya, Saajan, Khalnayak, and Raja.

Known for her versatility, expressive performances, and iconic dance numbers, Madhuri Dixit remains one of Bollywood’s most enduring screen presences.

On the work front, she will next be seen in the dark comedy Maa Behen, co-starring Triptii Dimri, Dharna Durga, and Ravi Kishan. Directed by Suresh Triveni and produced by Vikram Malhotra under Abundantia Entertainment and Opening Image Films, the film is expected to release digitally on Netflix on June 4. (Source: IANS)
