Face-to-Face with Satish Jha Ahead of the Vidya Bharati New England Gala: Human Capital, His New Book and India’s Education Revolution

Vidya Bharati USA board member and author Satish Jha discusses the future of education in India, the role of values-based learning, and the upcoming July 12 gala in Burlington, Massachusetts featuring chief guest Desh Deshpande.

BOSTON–Satish Jha, board member of the Vidya Bharati USA Foundation, believes the future of India will ultimately be determined not only by economic growth or technological innovation, but by the strength and accessibility of its educational system.

In a face-to-face conversation ahead of the organization’s second annual gala in Burlington, Massachusetts, Jha discusses India’s evolving education landscape, the transformative role of Vidya Bharati, and the urgent need to invest in human capital at scale.

Scheduled for July 12 at the Boston Marriott Burlington, the Vidya Bharati Foundation USA Gala will bring together educators, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, technologists, and members of the Indian diaspora for an evening focused on education, innovation, and nation-building. The event will feature networking and a cocktail reception, inspiring speakers, a SETU performance, South Asian dinner, and live entertainment.

Serving as Chief Guest will be renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist Desh Deshpande, whose decades-long commitment to innovation and education has made him one of the most respected voices in the Indian-American community. Organizers say his participation reflects the growing recognition that India’s future competitiveness will depend heavily on how effectively it educates and empowers its next generation.

During the interview, Jha reflects on the scale and mission of Vidya Bharati, one of India’s largest educational networks, which reaches more than three million students through over 12,000 schools, many serving rural and underserved communities. He explains how the organization’s model combines academic learning with values-based education, character development, and community engagement — an approach he believes is essential in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, economic disruption, and rapidly changing workforce demands.

Jha also discusses his newly published book, The Full Plate: India’s Education Revolution and the Race for Human Capital, which examines the interconnected challenges facing Indian education, including nutrition, teacher quality, accountability, technology access, and economic opportunity. The book argues that education must be viewed not merely as philanthropy, but as a long-term institutional investment capable of shaping India’s social and economic trajectory for generations.

For Jha, the gala represents more than a fundraising event. It is an opportunity to encourage deeper engagement from the global Indian diaspora in helping build the educational foundation that will define India’s future.
