Dalai Lama Discharged From Delhi Hospital After Knee Replacement Surgery

Dharamsala — Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama was discharged from a New Delhi hospital Friday after undergoing left knee replacement surgery, according to a medical bulletin.
The Buddhist monk had earlier undergone right knee replacement surgery in June 2024 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and made an excellent recovery.
A senior consultant at the hospital said the Dalai Lama underwent successful left knee replacement surgery Monday, June 8.
“His Holiness the Dalai Lama underwent successful left knee replacement surgery on Monday, June 8. Throughout his treatment, His Holiness’s personal medical team and the office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama remained in close coordination with the administrative and medical staff at Apollo Hospitals. His Holiness is stable and expected to make a full recovery. He was discharged on Friday morning, June 12. It has been a great honour for the hospital and the medical team to serve His Holiness the Dalai Lama,” the consultant said.
After his recovery, the Dalai Lama is scheduled to visit Ladakh toward the end of June for an extended stay, his office has announced.
The spiritual leader often travels across the remote mountainous Ladakh region, which borders Tibet, to meet people of different faiths. His visits frequently draw criticism from China. He is also expected to attend a public program marking his 91st birthday on July 6, likely in Leh.
In 1959, Chinese troops suppressed the Tibetan national uprising in Lhasa, forcing the Dalai Lama and more than 80,000 Tibetans into exile in India and neighboring countries. After a difficult three-week journey to India, the Dalai Lama lived for about a year in Mussoorie in Uttarakhand.
The Tibetan government-in-exile is now based in Dharamsala, a hillside town in Himachal Pradesh, where a Tibetan exile community lives with the Dalai Lama while continuing its campaign for autonomy in Tibet. (Source: IANS)
