NEW DELHI — At least eight people were killed and more than a dozen injured on Monday evening after an explosion tore through parked cars near the Red Fort Metro Station, prompting security agencies to place Delhi, Mumbai, and Uttar Pradesh on high alert.
The blast occurred in the densely populated Old Delhi area, sending crowds into panic as flames engulfed multiple vehicles. The injured were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital for treatment.
The Delhi Fire Department said multiple calls were made reporting loud blast-like sounds, after which fire crews responded and found several cars burning. Seven fire engines were deployed to contain the fire and secure the scene.
Senior Delhi Police officials, along with the Special Cell, quickly cordoned off the area. Investigators are examining the remains of the vehicles to determine the cause of the explosion. No official statement has been made regarding whether the incident is terror-related, though social media speculation has suggested that possibility.
The incident site, located near one of the capital’s most visited historical landmarks, has led to heightened vigilance in crowded markets, transit hubs, and major intersections across multiple states.
Ambulances and emergency response teams continue to operate at the scene, and further updates are expected as the investigation develops. (Source: IANS)
