Mona Singh Urges Viewers Not to Glorify Mothers’ Sacrifices Ahead of New Series

MUMBAI — Actress Mona Singh is encouraging audiences to see mothers as individuals, not just as symbols of sacrifice, ahead of her upcoming series “Maa Ka Sum.”

Mona Singh

Singh, who plays a modern single mother in the show, said it is important for younger audiences to recognize that mothers have their own identities, emotions, and aspirations beyond parenting.

“I feel it’s important… to see their mothers as individuals first. They have dreams, emotions, and a life beyond just being a parent,” she said, adding that greater understanding would be “a beautiful takeaway.”

The series follows a 19-year-old trying to “solve” his mother’s love life using logic and algorithms, while she navigates her own emotional journey.

Speaking about her role, Singh said her character stands apart from traditional portrayals of mothers as self-sacrificing figures.

“She’s a mother, yes, but she’s also a woman with her own life, her own choices, her own desires… she’s figuring things out on her own terms,” she said.

“Maa Ka Sum,” produced by Eunoia Films, also stars Mihir Ahuja, Angira Dhar, and Ranveer Brar, and will stream on Prime Video.

The actress collaborated with rapper Divine and Punjabi artist Riar Saab on the track, which was shot across several locations in Singapore.

“Singapore had been on my travel wish list for a while, and now it has my heart… It stopped feeling like we were working and shooting and started feeling like I was falling in love with the city,” Roy said.
