STAMFORD, CT– Thirty-three-year-old Bhaumik Patel of Norwalk, CT, a former RBS software developer, was found guilty of first-degree burglary and second-degree of unlawful restraint convictions that carry as much as 21 years in jail, according to news reports. Patel was found not guilty of home invasion and avoided at least 10 more years in jail.
“A former RBS software developer was acquitted Monday on a home invasion charge, but could still face more than 20 years in jail for breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s Woodside Green apartment and restraining her in 2015,” said Stamford Advocate.
Judge Gary White revoked Patel’s $175,000 bond that he posted three years ago. Patel will be jailed until he’s sentenced on Feb. 19.
“He is clearly an intelligent person. I believe he is a hard-working person. But his conduct in this case was brazen, dangerous and notable since the presumption of innocence no longer applies and he faces the strong prospect of significant incarceration,” judge White said when he explained revoking Patel’s bail. “Underneath these circumstances, I don’t think bond is appropriate,” according to Stamford Advocate.
Stamford Advocated reported that in an apparent effort to reconcile their relationship, Patel used a key to the victim’s apartment that he was given when they dated. The Norwalk resident waited for the woman to return home and then tried to use tape to cover her mouth when she screamed. The woman escaped and called police.
