Anand Sharma Launches Campaign for Shrewsbury Select Board

Longtime resident emphasizes smart growth, fiscal discipline, and community engagement ahead of May election

SHREWSBURY, Mass.Anand Sharma has announced his candidacy for the Shrewsbury Select Board, outlining a campaign focused on managing growth, maintaining fiscal responsibility, and strengthening community involvement as the town prepares for its upcoming municipal election.

A resident of Shrewsbury for more than 25 years, Sharma said his decision to run was driven by concerns about the pace and impact of development in the community.

“We chose Shrewsbury for its character, strong schools, and vibrant community,” Sharma said. “But over time, we’ve seen rapid development that has strained our infrastructure, increased traffic, and reduced the green space that defines our town.”

Central to Sharma’s platform is what he describes as a “smart growth” approach—balancing new development with the town’s existing infrastructure and long-term needs. He has called for careful evaluation of projects to ensure that roads, schools, and public services can support continued expansion.

“Growth should not come at the expense of quality of life,” Sharma said, adding that he supports measures such as temporary zoning moratoriums to allow time for planning and community input.

Sharma’s campaign also highlights support for seniors and families. He has proposed expanding programs that help older residents remain in their homes, including tax relief initiatives and enhanced services.

“We owe it to our seniors to ensure they can age with dignity in the community they helped build,” he said.

In addition, Sharma has emphasized the importance of investing in local schools, increasing recreational opportunities for children, and fostering a family-friendly environment that supports long-term stability.

On the economic front, Sharma said he aims to strengthen the local business environment by supporting small businesses, attracting investment, and encouraging job creation.

“A strong local economy benefits everyone—from families to seniors to small business owners,” he said.

Professionally, Sharma works at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and holds degrees in electrical engineering and business administration. He said his background in analytical problem-solving and financial management would inform his approach to town governance.

Beyond his professional work, Sharma has been active in local civic life, including involvement with community organizations such as the Spirit of Shrewsbury, the Rotary Club, and the town’s 300th Anniversary Committee. He has also served as a Town Meeting Member.

Sharma has previously spoken out on several key local issues, including the Beal School project, MBTA zoning changes, proposed warehouse development near town aquifers, and plans for a new Department of Public Works facility. He has also advocated for increased transparency in local government, including support for electronic voting at Town Meeting.

“I will provide responsible leadership, fiscal discipline, and transparent governance,” Sharma said. “Your voice matters.”

The Shrewsbury municipal election is scheduled for May 5. Sharma said he plans to continue meeting with residents in the coming weeks as part of his campaign outreach.

“This campaign is about listening, understanding concerns, and working together to build a stronger future for Shrewsbury,” he said.
