WESTON, MA—All eyes, including those of the American media and the Indian-American community, will be on American Idol contestant Sonika Vaid Thursday night. With the hope that Vaid might become the first Indian-American American Idol, the Asian-Indian community is especially interested.
Moreover, the US media is already cannot get enough of Vaid.
Gossip Cop news portal reported that on Wednesday night Vaid took on Celine Dion for a powerful performance on “American Idol.”
“For the first time this season, Vaid had to put it all on the line as she competed to win over America’s vote, and not the judges’. What’s more, the strong vocalist was fighting 10 of her fellow contestants to secure one of six wild card spots,” Gossip Cop said. “Top 14 frontrunners Dalton Rapattoni, Olivia Rox, Trent Harmon, and La’Porsha Renae were automatically welcomed into the Top 10 by the panel.”
Gossip Cop said that for the pressure-filled performance, Vaid chose to go back to a song that already impressed the judges once: “I Surrender.” “

Of course, measuring up to a superstar like Celine Dion is no easy feat. But the aspiring star once again pulled it off,” Gossip Cop said.
Gossip Cop also said that Jennifer Lopez gave a standing ovation, and told Vaid, “I said your voice is from god in the [pre-taped] package — it’s true. I don’t think I ever got goosies on my face [before now]… The way your voice sits in the music is so out of this world.” As she continued to gush, Harry Connick, Jr. amusingly yelled, “I think she liked it!”
The question now, though, is whether Vaid will be voted through by viewers. With four spots already filled, the rest of the Top 10 will be revealed on Thursday’s show, Gossip Cop said.
Boston Globe reported that when Vaid and Marlena Johnson boarded the same flight from Logan to LAX, they didn’t realize they were traveling for the same purpose: To compete on the final season of “American Idol.”
Vaid, 20, of Weston, and Johnson, 25, of New Bedford, bested thousands of applicants to compete on the 15th season of the Fox singing competition for celeb judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick Jr., as did Worcester native Jessica Cabral, 21, Boston Globe said.
The 20-year-old Vaid is an Indian-American whose parents came to the United States as kids. She is a summer resident of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, and a 2013 graduate of Weston High School, Weston, MA.
