Karthi’s ‘Sardar 2’ Cleared by CBFC With U/A Certificate, Set for September 10 Release

P.S. Mithran’s spy thriller promises a story about health and hygiene, following the blockbuster success of ‘Sardar’

Chennai, September 4 (IANS) — Actor Karthi-starrer ‘Sardar 2’, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2022 spy thriller ‘Sardar’, has received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with a U/A certificate, paving the way for its worldwide theatrical release on September 10.

Production house Prince Pictures, which is backing the film, announced the certification on social media, writing, “Stillness before the Storm. #Sardar2 certified with U/A.”

Directed by P.S. Mithran, the film has generated considerable interest among fans, particularly because of its social message. Speaking at the film’s trailer launch, Karthi said the story addresses a disturbing truth connected to people’s health and wellbeing.

“You might have continued the practice of drinking water from plastic water bottles, but after watching this film, you won’t be able to ignore the point it looks to make,” Karthi said.

He added that the issue explored in the film was likely to leave audiences “shaken.”

From water commercialisation to health and hygiene

The first installment, ‘Sardar’, focused on the commercialisation of water and went on to become a major box-office success.

With Sardar 2, Mithran has expanded the social concerns explored in the franchise, this time turning his attention to health and hygiene.

Karthi praised Mithran’s commitment to the subject and said he hoped the film would reach a wide audience.

“Director Mithran’s efforts for this film were very sincere. I wish this film reaches everybody,” the actor said, adding that audiences were ready to embrace films that addressed such issues.

The sequel is also expected to retain the spy-thriller elements that made the first film popular.

Story moves from Cambodia to China

The film’s production included an extensive schedule in Bangkok, with the team completing more than 100 days of shooting by April 2025. The Bangkok schedule was wrapped in June last year.

When the sequel was announced, the makers released a promotional video showing Karthi’s character being sent on a spy mission to Cambodia.

Asked about the film’s international setting, Mithran had revealed that the story initially moves to Cambodia before shifting to China.

Actress Malavika Mohanan is also part of the film. In May 2025, she had indicated during a fan question-and-answer session that she was scheduled to complete her work on the film in June.

Strong technical team

Sardar 2 has been mounted with a strong technical crew.

George Williams has handled cinematography, while Sam C.S. has composed the music. Vijay Velukutty is the editor, with art direction by MSP Madhavan and B. Sekar.

The screenplay and writing credits include Rathna Kumar, Aashameera Aiyappan and Vignesh Muniyand. Action sequences have been choreographed by Dhilip Subbarayan and Chethan D’Souza.

With the CBFC clearance now in place, Sardar 2 is set for a worldwide theatrical release on September 10, with Karthi and Mithran returning to a franchise that combines espionage with contemporary social concerns.
