Japanese Ambassador Praises India’s Diversity and Growth, Looks to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

NEW DELHI — Japanese Ambassador to India Ono Keiichi has expressed growing admiration for India’s cultural diversity, economic dynamism and expanding partnership with Japan as he marked two years in his diplomatic post.

Reflecting on his experiences traveling across India, Keiichi said Friday that his appreciation for the country and the potential of India-Japan relations had deepened considerably since his arrival in New Delhi.

The ambassador said he had undertaken 36 trips across 18 Indian states during his two-year tenure, gaining firsthand exposure to the country’s cultural traditions, economic development and regional diversity.

“Two years ago today, I arrived in Delhi as Japan’s Ambassador to India. After 36 trips across 18 states, my admiration for India’s dynamism, diversity, and the potential of Japan-India ties has only grown. Looking forward to strengthening our friendship as we mark 75 years in 2027!” Keiichi wrote on X.

The diplomat accompanied his message with a collection of photographs highlighting official engagements and personal experiences during his travels.

The images included meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, participation in diplomatic discussions involving External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and moments enjoying Indian cuisine and cultural events.

One photograph showed the ambassador taking a dip in the Ganges River in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, reflecting his engagement with India’s spiritual and cultural traditions.

Keiichi’s remarks come as India and Japan prepare to commemorate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2027.

The two countries established formal diplomatic ties in 1952 and have steadily expanded cooperation across economic, technological, defense and cultural sectors.

Their relationship was elevated to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014, reflecting growing cooperation on regional security, economic development and international issues.

Recent diplomatic engagements have underscored efforts by both governments to further strengthen their relationship.

In September, India’s Ambassador to Japan, Nagma Mallick, met Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Kazuhiro Fujii during the India-Japan International Friendship Cricket Match in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture.

The meeting, held September 22, provided an opportunity for the two officials to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation ahead of the 75th anniversary celebrations.

According to the Indian Embassy in Japan, Mallick congratulated Fujii on his appointment, and both officials agreed to work toward further expanding relations between the two countries.

The engagement highlighted the role of cultural and sporting exchanges in building closer connections between Indian and Japanese communities.

Bilateral relations also received fresh momentum following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s official visit to India in July.

During the visit, Takaichi held talks with Modi at the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, where the leaders reviewed cooperation across a broad range of strategic and economic areas.

Discussions covered trade and investment, economic security, energy, emerging technologies, defense cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual concern.

Following the summit, India and Japan announced several agreements and memorandums of understanding covering economic security, clean energy, critical technologies, and research and development.

The agreements reflected the countries’ shared interest in strengthening technological capabilities, expanding economic cooperation and developing more resilient supply chains.

India and Japan have maintained longstanding cultural connections, including historical exchanges rooted in Buddhism and other spiritual traditions.

Those historical ties have increasingly been complemented by cooperation in infrastructure development, manufacturing, scientific research and regional security.

As the two countries approach the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Keiichi’s reflections highlight the importance of personal engagement and cultural understanding in strengthening their broader strategic partnership.

The ambassador indicated that he intends to continue building on those connections as India and Japan enter the next phase of their diplomatic relationship. (Source: IANS)
