US Court Dismissal Ends Case Against Gautam Adani, Legal Experts Say

Ahmedabad — The dismissal of charges against Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani by a U.S. court has effectively ended the legal proceedings against him and removed potential obstacles to his business activities abroad, according to legal experts.

Senior advocate Raian Karanjawala, Managing Partner of Karanjawala & Co., said the case is now fully closed as far as Adani is concerned and cannot be revived on the same facts.

“So, the impact of this case is essentially that this case, as far as Gautam Adani is concerned, is closed totally. It cannot be again revived against him, and he is now free to do business in any country in the world, including America, without impediment, and there is no case pending against him at all,” Karanjawala said.

He added that he had previously expected the U.S. Department of Justice to seek permission to withdraw the case and for the court to approve the request.

“Ultimately, what has happened is that the judge has granted permission. The case against Gautam Adani is withdrawn. The case against Gautam Adani is now closed. And on these facts, this case can never be revived,” he said.

Senior advocate and Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh also called the court’s decision significant. He pointed to the court’s observation that the government ideally should have consulted investigating agencies or prosecutors before seeking to close the matter.

“I think this order is very, very significant, and it is a game changer according to my understanding because this is a withdrawal by the Department of Justice after they have realized that this prosecution should never have been launched in the past,” Singh said.

Senior advocate Vikas Pahwa similarly described the dismissal as an important development for a conglomerate with extensive international operations.

Market analyst Arun Kejriwal said the U.S. proceedings had limited impact on the Adani Group’s operations in India, with infrastructure projects and expansion continuing while the case was pending.

“I believe it’s a great victory for Gautam Adani,” Kejriwal said, adding that the absence of judicial findings against him effectively gives the businessman a clean slate from the perspective of investors and market participants. (Source: IANS)
