Trump Congratulates Modi After BJP’s Breakthrough Win in West Bengal

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a major election victory in West Bengal, marking a historic breakthrough for Modi’s party in one of India’s most politically significant states.

White House spokesman Kush Desai said Trump praised Modi following the result, describing the outcome as a “historic, and decisive election victory.”

“Just last month on their phone call, President Trump expressed to Prime Minister Modi his admiration and how lucky India is to have him as its leader. The President congratulates Prime Minister Modi on this recent, historic, and decisive election victory,” Desai said.

The BJP’s win marks the first time Modi’s party has taken control of West Bengal, a state long dominated by the Trinamool Congress under Mamata Banerjee. The result ends Banerjee’s 15-year hold on power and gives Modi a major political boost midway through his third term.

Speaking to supporters in New Delhi, Modi said the result represented a turning point for the state.

“A new chapter has been added to Bengal’s destiny….People’s power has prevailed and BJP’s politics of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal,” he said.

West Bengal had long been considered one of the BJP’s most difficult political frontiers. The state has historically been shaped by regional and left-leaning politics, making the party’s victory a significant shift in India’s political landscape.

Analysts said the result reflected anti-incumbency sentiment against Banerjee’s government, as well as a stronger and more organized BJP campaign in the state.

Rahul Verma of the Centre for Policy Research described the result as the culmination of a “seven-year project” by the BJP leadership.

“The BJP had a strong and well organised presence in West Bengal and Modi is seen as a charismatic leader,” Verma said, adding that “this kind of result also wouldn’t have happened without a consolidation of the Hindu vote.” (Source: IANS)
