WASHINGTON — All six crew members aboard a U.S. Air Force KC-135 refueling aircraft that crashed in western Iraq during a military mission have been confirmed dead, the U.S. military said Friday.

Officials said the aircraft was operating over western Iraq when it was lost.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash. Early information indicates the aircraft was not brought down by hostile activity.

“The circumstances of the incident are under investigation,” the statement said.

However, officials noted that preliminary findings suggest the aircraft was not lost due to enemy action or friendly fire.

“However, the loss of the aircraft was not due to hostile fire or friendly fire,” the statement said.

The identities of the six service members who died have not yet been released. Military officials said their names will be made public after their families have been notified.

“The identities of the service members are being withheld until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified,” the statement said.
