Theegala Faces Uphill Battle for Tour Championship Spot as Bhatia Sits Comfortably

St. Louis — Sahith Theegala faces a difficult task at the 2026 BMW Championship as he looks to climb into the top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings and qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship.
The BMW Championship, being played at Bellerive Country Club from Aug. 20 to 23, features the final 50 players in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Only the top 30 after this week will advance to the Tour Championship.
Bellerive is a par-70 course measuring 7,448 yards and is expected to place a premium on accurate ball-striking and long-iron play. The $20 million tournament has no halfway cut, giving all 50 players four rounds to improve their positions.
Theegala enters the week at No. 46 in the FedEx Cup standings. While his place in next season’s Signature Events is secure after finishing inside the top 50, he will likely need a finish near the top of the leaderboard to move into the top 30.
A top-three result could be required to give him a realistic chance of extending his playoff run. Theegala will begin the tournament alongside Justin Thomas.
Among the Indian-origin players in the field, Akshay Bhatia is in a much stronger position. The three-time PGA Tour winner sits at No. 15 in the FedEx Cup standings and has effectively secured his place in the Tour Championship.
Bhatia, who won the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this season, will play alongside Hideki Matsuyama.
Aaron Rai is 37th in the standings and also needs a strong performance to move into the top 30. The English-Indian golfer, who won the PGA Championship earlier this year, is paired with Ben Griffin.
The 2026 playoffs have been a notable season for Indian-origin golfers, with four players advancing through the regular season and three reaching the BMW Championship. Bhatia, Theegala and Rai have all secured starts in next season’s Signature Events.
Sudarshan Yellamaraju, the Indo-Canadian rookie, narrowly missed the BMW Championship field after finishing 58th in the standings.
At the top of the field, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler arrives after an eight-shot victory at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Rory McIlroy, Rai and Xander Schauffele are among the other leading contenders.
Much of the pressure this week, however, will center on the top-30 cutoff. Rickie Fowler, Kurt Kitayama, Gary Woodland, Adam Scott, Sungjae Im and Viktor Hovland are among the players battling to keep their seasons alive.
For Theegala, the situation is straightforward: he needs one of his best finishes of the season at Bellerive to have a realistic chance of reaching East Lake. (Source: IANS)
