New Delhi— Senior members of the Union Cabinet on Monday paid tribute to veteran actor Dharmendra, whose death at 89 prompted widespread mourning across the country. Leaders described him as an artist who shaped generations of Indian cinema and a public figure remembered for his warmth and simplicity.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said Dharmendra’s passing marked “the end of an era that redefined simplicity, emotion, and intimacy on screen.” He recalled how the actor’s performances resonated deeply with audiences. “Dharmendra ji made us laugh, cry, and often moved us to the core,” Goyal said, offering condolences to the family.
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri called Dharmendra “a stylish, suave and immensely talented actor who held an unshakeable sway over cinegoers for decades.” In a post on X, Puri wrote that Dharmendra “will always be remembered as a down-to-earth, affable and kind human being who ruled hearts and screens like a colossus.”
Puri, who also noted Dharmendra’s tenure as a BJP parliamentarian from Bikaner, said he joined “legions of fans and admirers” in mourning the loss.
Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said Dharmendra’s death was “a monumental loss for Indian cinema and public life.” Sonowal highlighted the actor’s versatility, noting that he brought to life a wide range of roles—from romance to action—that helped shape modern Indian film. “His enduring legacy will continue to guide and enrich generations,” he said.
Dharmendra, one of Hindi cinema’s most enduring stars, was known for films including Phool Aur Patthar, Chupke Chupke, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, and the iconic Sholay, where his portrayal of Veeru became a cultural touchstone.
