WASHINGTON– President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 percent tariff on imports from India, citing the country’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
According to the White House, the move strengthens earlier sanctions on Moscow over its actions in Ukraine. It follows a similar 25 percent tariff on Indian goods announced by Trump last week.
The order alleges that India is “directly or indirectly” importing Russian oil, which the U.S. deems a threat to its national security and foreign policy.
“Accordingly, and consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 percent,” the order states.
The new tariff will take effect 21 days after the order’s signing, applying to all eligible Indian goods entering the U.S. Shipments already loaded and in transit before the deadline — and cleared before September 17 — will be exempt.
These duties are in addition to existing tariffs unless covered by exemptions outlined in earlier trade executive orders. Goods subject to the tariff must comply with strict customs requirements, including admission to U.S. foreign trade zones under “privileged foreign status.”
The order gives the president authority to adjust or revoke the measure in response to changes in circumstances, retaliatory actions by affected countries, or major policy shifts by Russia or India.
It also directs the Commerce, State, and Treasury departments — along with other agencies — to monitor global oil trade with Russia and recommend similar actions against other nations if warranted. (Source: IANS)
