US Portfolio Holdings in India Rise to $390 Billion
Washington — U.S. portfolio holdings in Indian securities rose to $390 billion at the end of 2025, keeping India among the leading overseas destinations for American investment, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
The figures were published in the Treasury Department’s Preliminary Annual Report on U.S. Portfolio Holdings of Foreign Securities at Year-End 2025, released Aug. 31. The survey was conducted jointly by the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Federal Reserve Board.
India ranked 12th among countries and jurisdictions receiving the largest amount of U.S. portfolio investment, unchanged from a year earlier.
American holdings in Indian securities increased by $7 billion from $383 billion at the end of 2024, a gain of about 1.8%.
Most of the holdings were in Indian stocks. U.S. investors held $380 billion in Indian equities at the end of 2025, up from $373 billion a year earlier.
Holdings of Indian long-term debt securities rose to $11 billion from $10 billion, while short-term debt holdings were valued at less than $500 million.
The figures represent the market value of Indian securities owned by U.S. investors and do not include foreign direct investment in factories, infrastructure or other physical assets.
India remained ahead of mainland China, where U.S. portfolio holdings were valued at $318 billion. American investors held $300 billion in Chinese stocks and $17 billion in long-term Chinese debt.
U.S. holdings in mainland China increased from $240 billion in 2024 but remained $72 billion below holdings in India.
India also narrowly surpassed South Korea, which had $384 billion in U.S. portfolio holdings. Taiwan ranked 10th at $668 billion, while Australia ranked 11th at $478 billion.
The Cayman Islands remained the largest destination for U.S. portfolio investment, with holdings valued at $3.07 trillion. The United Kingdom ranked second at $2.01 trillion, followed by Canada at $1.89 trillion.
Japan attracted $1.48 trillion in U.S. portfolio holdings, while Ireland accounted for $1.18 trillion. France, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany were also among the top destinations.
Overall, U.S. portfolio holdings of foreign securities rose to about $19.3 trillion at the end of 2025 from $15.8 trillion a year earlier.
American investors held $15.25 trillion in foreign equities, representing nearly four-fifths of their overseas securities holdings. Long-term foreign debt holdings totaled $3.61 trillion, while short-term debt securities were valued at $423 billion.
The increase in overseas holdings was driven largely by equities, which rose from about $12.1 trillion in 2024. Long-term debt holdings increased from $3.35 trillion, while short-term debt holdings rose from $380 billion. (Source: IANS)
