CHENNAI– An American university student was detained early Thursday at Chennai International Airport after security officials discovered a banned satellite phone in his possession — a violation of Indian law due to national security concerns.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. as a Scoot Airlines flight to Singapore was preparing for departure. During a routine baggage screening, officials found the satellite phone in the luggage of 22-year-old Oakley Jackson, who was en route to Australia via Singapore.

Jackson had arrived in Chennai last week from Delhi on a tourist visa. During questioning, he claimed he was unaware that satellite phones were prohibited in India and said he had previously traveled from the U.S. to Delhi and then to Chennai without incident.

However, airport security rejected his explanation, citing the potential threat posed by unmonitored satellite communication. His flight ticket was canceled, and the device was confiscated.

Jackson and the satellite phone were handed over to the airport police for further investigation. Authorities are examining whether he used the device while in India, and if so, whom he contacted. They are also checking if any outside parties attempted to reach him via the phone.

“Satellite phones can bypass conventional communication networks, and their unmonitored usage poses a serious security threat,” said a senior airport official. “Strict action is taken whenever such devices are found.”

The U.S. Consulate in Chennai has been notified and is expected to provide assistance as the inquiry progresses.

Under Indian law, carrying a satellite phone without prior clearance from the Department of Telecommunications is a punishable offense. Authorities have repeatedly urged foreign travelers to declare such devices upon entry and obtain necessary permissions.

Jackson remains in police custody pending further investigation. The outcome of the inquiry will determine whether charges are filed. (Source: IANS)
