LONDON– Prime Minister Narendra Modi was met with a jubilant reception by the Indian community in London as he arrived for a two-day official visit focused on deepening India-UK relations and signing a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Members of the diaspora greeted him with chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” “Vande Mataram,” and “Modi, Modi,” while traditional dhol performances and celebratory dancing marked his arrival.

“Touched by the warm welcome from the Indian community in the UK. Their affection and passion towards India’s progress is truly heartening,” PM Modi wrote on X after arriving in London on Wednesday evening.

Crowds gathered outside Modi’s hotel holding posters and waving Indian flags, with many expressing pride and emotion at meeting the Prime Minister. “We are so proud, and I am still in tears. You can see that my eyes are still filled with the happiness and joy he brought while shaking our hands,” said one attendee. Others praised Modi’s leadership on initiatives such as digital transformation and Operation Sindoor, and described him as an inspiring and powerful presence.

“Every time PM Modi comes, he strengthens the UK-India bond and brings positivity,” another community member said. “I have great hope this time as well.”

The visit, Modi’s fourth to the UK, was extended by invitation from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The leaders are expected to review the progress of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), with a strong focus on trade, technology, defense, climate, health, education, and cultural exchange. Modi is also expected to call on King Charles III during the visit.

In a post before his departure, PM Modi noted, “Leaving for the UK, a country with which our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has achieved significant momentum in the last few years. I look forward to my talks with PM Keir Starmer and my meeting with His Majesty King Charles III.”

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the visit will also address regional and global issues of mutual interest and is anticipated to inject fresh momentum into the India-UK relationship. Modi and Starmer have previously met during the G20 Summit in Brazil and at the G7 in June 2025, and have maintained frequent communication. (Source: IANS)
