GURUGRAM– In a tragic and shocking incident, a national-level tennis player was shot dead by her father at their home in Gurugram on Thursday following a dispute over her decision to continue running a sports academy, police said.

The victim, 25-year-old Radhika Yadav, was fatally shot around 10:30 a.m. in her residence in Sushant Lok Phase-2, Sector-57, by her father, Deepak Yadav, 49, using his licensed firearm. According to police, Deepak was reportedly angry over his daughter’s insistence on managing the tennis academy despite his repeated objections.

“The accused has admitted to committing the crime,” said Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep, adding that Deepak’s brother, Kuldeep—who lives on the ground floor of the house—filed the complaint.

Authorities said the incident unfolded on the first floor of the residence during a heated argument between the father and daughter. Deepak, who reportedly depends on rental income for his living expenses, was unhappy with Radhika’s continued focus on the academy.

“In the middle of the argument, the father pulled out his licensed firearm and fired multiple shots at her,” a police official said.

Police confirmed that five rounds were fired, three of which struck Radhika. Family members rushed her to a private hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries.

The firearm used in the shooting has been seized and sent for ballistic and forensic analysis, according to a Gurugram Police spokesperson.

Station House Officer Rajender Kumar of Sector-56 police station stated that hospital authorities informed police after Radhika was brought in with gunshot wounds.

“We are questioning family members to understand the full nature of the conflict and to determine whether any other motive may have played a role,” an official said.

Radhika was a well-regarded doubles tennis player and ranked among the top 200 players, according to a sports website. (Source: IANS)
