50,000 Participants in 100+ US Cities Join BAPS Charities Spirit of Service Walk-Run Ahead of America250

NORTH AMERICA — As the United States prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary in 2026, more than 50,000 people participated in the BAPS Charities Spirit of Service Walk-Run this spring, transforming parks, town squares, and community gathering spaces across more than 100 cities into celebrations of volunteerism, civic engagement, and community service.
The nationwide initiative, part of the broader America250 observance, brought together families, elected officials, first responders, and community leaders to support local charitable organizations and causes. Collectively, the events benefited more than 90 organizations throughout the United States and Canada, including food banks, cancer research centers, first responder agencies, educational programs, and social service organizations.
The walk-runs highlighted a shared commitment to community service while reinforcing the importance of local volunteerism as a cornerstone of civic life.
In Greater Houston, approximately 2,200 participants gathered at Sugar Land Town Square to support mental health, education, and law enforcement initiatives. Among those attending were U.S. Congressman Christian Menefee and Sugar Land Mayor Carol McCutcheon.
“We go on social media and think about ourselves. We watch the news and think about how it impacts us personally,” said Menefee. “But sometimes we need to focus on our neighbors, our brothers, our sisters, and our community — and that’s what this is all about.”
Similar messages of service and unity echoed across the country. In Dallas, State Representative Matt Shaheen praised the spirit of volunteerism that brought participants together.
“We have gotten united here for a purpose,” Shaheen said. “There is just joy that we experience together in serving others, and that is what BAPS Charities is all about.”
In Edison, New Jersey, U.S. Congressman Frank Pallone joined a bipartisan group of state and local officials, including State Senator Patrick Diegnan, Assemblymen Robert Karabinchak and Joe Danielson, and the mayors of Edison, Piscataway, and East Brunswick.
Pennsylvania’s event attracted support from U.S. Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, State Senators Frank Farry and Steve Santarsiero, State Representatives Jim Prokopiak and Tina Davis, and Bucks County District Attorney Joe Khan. In Connecticut, State Senator Matt Lesser, State Representatives Jillian Gilchrest and Tom Delnicki, and Rocky Hill Mayor Allen Smith participated in local service initiatives.
Community leaders also joined events throughout the Midwest and South. In Sterling Heights, Michigan, State Senator Michael Webber and State Representative Tom Kuhn supported local charitable efforts, while in Jackson, Mississippi, Mayor John Horhn, State Senator Sollie Norwood, and Fire Chief Rasean Thomas participated alongside residents.
A defining feature of the BAPS Charities Spirit of Service Walk-Run is its decentralized approach to philanthropy, allowing local committees to identify and support organizations that address the unique needs of their communities.
Beneficiaries across North America highlighted the impact of the initiative.
“BAPS Charities’ continued support holds an important role in promoting cancer research,” said Monty Permenter of the American Cancer Society in Jackson, Mississippi. “Their contributions help create a lasting influence on individuals and families affected by cancer.”
In New Jersey, Lydia Nadeu of the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center emphasized the direct impact on patients.
“Today, your support helps our patients; individuals you may never know, yet your generosity allows us to continue this important work,” she said.
Katrina Bostick, CEO of Family Promise of the Coastal Empire in Savannah, Georgia, said the support would help provide resources for homeless families and children working toward long-term stability.
Meanwhile, Doug Clarke of the Rocky Hill Fire Department in Connecticut noted that proceeds from the event would help recruit and retain volunteer firefighters as the department approaches its 100th anniversary.
The Spirit of Service Walk-Run reflects the broader mission of BAPS Charities, a global humanitarian organization that promotes volunteerism and community engagement through health awareness, educational initiatives, disaster relief, environmental stewardship, and community empowerment.
Guided by the principle, “In the joy of others lies our own,” the organization has spent more than five decades supporting local and global causes through volunteer-driven programs and humanitarian efforts.
As America marks 250 years of independence, organizers say the widespread participation in the 2026 Spirit of Service Walk-Run demonstrates how local acts of service can strengthen communities and advance shared civic values.
By bringing together tens of thousands of volunteers in cities across North America, the initiative underscored a simple message: meaningful change often begins at the local level, through neighbors helping neighbors and communities working together toward a common good.
BAPS Charities is a global nonprofit organization active in nine countries across five continents. For more than 50 years, the organization has promoted selfless service through health awareness, educational services, humanitarian relief, environmental protection, and community empowerment initiatives. Through local volunteer programs and international humanitarian efforts, BAPS Charities provides opportunities for individuals to serve both their communities and the broader global society.
