New Delhi– India has only over 33,000 atheists, Census 2011 data has revealed. The 33,304 listed in the report include 22,828 from rural and 10,476 from urban areas.

Maharashtra tops the list with 9,652 atheists, followed by Meghalaya (9,089) and Kerala (4,896). Delhi has 541 atheists. The Census 2011 data puts India’s population at 1.2 billion.

In its first such listing, the Census department says only 0.0027 per cent of the population is atheist.

Atheism is, in the broadest sense, the absence of belief in the existence of deities, according to Wikipedia. Less broadly, atheism is the rejection of belief that any deities exist. In an even narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities, adds Wikipedia.

No. Atheism has only one sense, only one definition: “disbelief in gods”. There is no “narrower sense”. The Oxford Dictionary of English, the most authoritative source for the meaning of English words in existence, defines atheism as “Disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.” If you think there are other meanings for the word, think again.
