New Delhi– Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday became one of the first world leaders to congratulate Mark Carney on his election victory as Canada’s new Prime Minister and to commend the Liberal Party on their success.

“India and Canada are bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership and unlock greater opportunities for our people,” Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter), shortly after Carney secured his win late Monday night, Ottawa time.

Relations between New Delhi and Ottawa had sharply deteriorated under Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau, whose repeated remarks against India and open sympathy toward Khalistani separatists strained diplomatic ties. Trudeau also engaged in public confrontations with U.S. President Donald Trump during his tenure.

Carney, a renowned economist and former Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, was selected by the Liberal Party to succeed Trudeau. Throughout his campaign, he pledged to “rebuild” Canada’s relationship with India and emphasized the need for renewed cooperation between the two nations.

“What Canada will be looking to do is to diversify our trading relationships with like-minded countries, and there are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India,” Carney said during a campaign event in Calgary.

Reaffirming his commitment just last week, Carney noted, “It’s an incredibly important relationship, the Canada-India relationship, on many levels. At a time when the world economy and the global system are being reshaped, countries like Canada and India can play an outsized role in building an open, collaborative global economy and partnership.”

Carney’s previous roles have brought him into close engagement with India. As Governor of the Bank of Canada during the 2008 global financial crisis, he helped navigate the country through economic turbulence, preserving jobs and stabilizing growth. In 2013, he took the helm of the Bank of England, steering the United Kingdom through the aftermath of Brexit and subsequent economic challenges. Since 2020, he has served as the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance, helping coordinate global efforts to strengthen economies while addressing climate change.

Carney’s campaign emphasized his vision for a stronger economic future: “Mark offers the proven leadership and real plan we need to deliver change for our party and our country, and to build the strongest economy in the G7. We are a proud nation of builders — and now, it’s time to build. Let’s build together,” reads his profile on the Liberal Party’s website. (Source: IANS)
