Needham to Celebrate International Yoga Day with Free Community Wellness Event

NEEDHAM, Mass. — Residents of Needham and neighboring communities are invited to gather for a morning of wellness, movement, and connection as ICON hosts its fourth annual International Yoga Day celebration on Sunday, June 21, at Greene’s Field in Needham, MA.

The free community event will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Greene’s Field, located at 20 Pickering Street, and is expected to attract approximately 75 participants. Open to all ages and experience levels, the event aims to bring people together through the practice of yoga while promoting physical and mental well-being.

Organized by ICON, the annual celebration has become a growing local tradition, drawing families, friends, and neighbors outdoors to recognize International Yoga Day. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat or towel, wear comfortable clothing, and arrive a few minutes early to settle in before the session begins.

“This event is about much more than yoga,” organizers said. “It’s an opportunity to strengthen community connections, encourage healthy lifestyles, and create a welcoming space where everyone can participate regardless of age or experience.”

Over the past four years, the International Yoga Day gathering has steadily expanded, reflecting growing interest in community-based wellness activities. Organizers anticipate this year’s event will be the largest yet.

The celebration is also closely connected to Needham’s Yoga Club, one of several community groups that make up the ICON Desi Clubs initiative. Founded by Shalini Jha, the Desi Clubs include a Yoga Club, Book Club, and Walk Club, each designed to foster social engagement and community bonding across generations.

The Yoga Club meets regularly on Saturday mornings and has become a popular gathering for residents seeking a consistent wellness routine. While International Yoga Day serves as the club’s signature annual event, the weekly sessions continue to welcome newcomers throughout the year.

Organizers say the combination of physical activity, mindfulness, and community interaction has helped make the program a meaningful part of local life.

As communities across the world observe International Yoga Day, Needham’s celebration offers residents an opportunity to join a global movement while strengthening connections close to home.

The event is free and open to the public. No prior yoga experience is required.
