Mathematician and Professor Emeritus Venkatramani Lakshmibai Passes Away at 78

NEWTON, MA—Venkatramani Lakshmibai, a mathematician and professor emeritus of mathematics at Northeastern University in Boston, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023. A resident of Newton, Prof. Lakshmibai was 78.

Prof. Lakshmibai is survived by her son Girish Venkataramani and his wife Jennifer Dignazio of Berkeley, CA, her grandson, Dhulipala Rakhal of Mumbai, India, her former husband M.P. Venkataramani of Mumbai, India and many nieces, nephews, and friends, according to her official bio.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 7th at the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home, 1479 Washington Street, West Newton, MA from 5:30 to 6 PM. Followed by a funeral service at 6 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.

Prof. Lakshmibai’s research focused on algebraic geometry, the theory of algebraic groups, and representation theory, including in particular the theory of flag varieties and Schubert varieties, according to Wikipedia.

Prof. Lakshmibai earned her Ph.D in 1976 from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. With Sara Billey she is the co-author of the monograph Singular Loci of Schubert Varieties (Progress in Mathematics 182, Birkhäuser, 2000).[2] She has also co-authored two monographs with Justin Brown: Flag Varieties: An Interplay of Geometry, Combinatorics, and Representation Theory (Texts and Readings in Mathematics 53, Hindustan Book Agency, 2009) and The Grassmannian Variety: Geometric and Representation-Theoretic Aspects (Developments in Mathematics 42, Springer, 2015), according to Wikipedia.

In 2012 she was selected as one of the inaugural fellows of the American Mathematical Society.
