Madhusmita Misra Receives Lifetime Award for Mentorship From Harvard Medical School

BOSTON–Madhusmita (Madhu) Misra, MD, MPH, Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Fritz Bradley Talbot and Nathan Bill Talbot Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, has received a William Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School.

The award ceremony was held on June 7th, 2023, with felicitations from Dean Joan Reede and mentees of the awardees. Nominations for this award come from the candidate’s mentees, and awardees are selected by a panel at Harvard Medical School. Of note, Dr. Misra has also received the Mentor of the Year Award from the Pediatric Endocrine Society for 2022. She initiated a mentor- mentee matching program for the Pediatric Endocrine Society many years ago and runs a similar matching program within the Department of Pediatrics at MGH.

Dr. Misra is a past President of the Pediatric Endocrine Society (2020-2021). Dr. Misra is a physician scientist with extensive NIH funding for her work on neuroendocrine, metabolic and bone outcomes in conditions spanning the weight spectrum from anorexia nervosa to obesity, and in diabetes mellitus and autism spectrum disorder. Her work has been paradigm shifting in the management of impaired bone health in conditions of low body weight and relative energy deficit in adolescents and young adults.

She has published over 220 original research papers and over 120 chapters, reviews, position statements and editorials, the majority of which have been published with her mentees. While she sees children, adolescents and young adults with all kinds of endocrine conditions, her special clinical expertise lies in pituitary and bone disorders. Dr. Misra also wears other administrative hats in MGH, including serving as Medical Research Officer for the Harvard Catalyst at MGH, the Associate Director of the Translational and Clinical Research Center at MGH and the Associate Chief for Academic Faculty Development for the Department of Pediatrics at MGH.
