Jaishankar, Iranian Foreign Minister Hold Talks on West Asia Conflict

NEW DELHI — India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a detailed phone conversation on Wednesday, discussing the ongoing conflict in West Asia along with broader bilateral and regional issues.

Jaishankar said the two sides reviewed multiple aspects of the evolving situation and agreed to stay in close contact. “Received a phone call from Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi of Iran this evening. Had a detailed conversation about various aspects of the current situation. We agreed to remain in close touch,” he said in a social media post.

The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi said the discussion also covered developments related to a ceasefire, as well as wider regional and international matters. Both ministers exchanged views on the situation and reaffirmed the importance of continued engagement.

The call came as tensions persist across West Asia, with Araghchi recently concluding a three-nation visit to Pakistan, Oman, and Russia.

During his trip, the Iranian foreign minister met Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg, where Moscow reiterated its support for efforts to restore peace in the region. Araghchi also held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic coordination.

“Pleased to engage with Russia at the highest level as the region is in major flux. Recent events have evidenced the depth and strength of our strategic partnership. As our relationship continues to grow, we are grateful for solidarity and welcome Russia’s support for diplomacy,” Araghchi said.

India has consistently called for de-escalation and dialogue amid the tensions. On March 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, discussing regional security concerns and condemning attacks on critical infrastructure. Modi also stressed the need to safeguard freedom of navigation and ensure the security of shipping routes.

Earlier, in a separate call on March 12, Modi expressed concern over rising tensions, highlighting civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure, and reiterated that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. (Source: IANS)
