Italian Artists Perform Indian Classical Music for Modi During Rome Visit

ROME — Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised a group of Italian musicians who performed Indian classical music during a community welcome event in Rome, saying Indian music is gaining popularity in Italy.
The performers played Hamsadhwani, a bright and auspicious raga used in both Carnatic and Hindustani classical music. The pentatonic raga, whose name means “the cry of the swan,” was created in the 18th century by Carnatic composer Ramaswami Dikshitar and is often used to open concerts and invocations.
Sharing a video of the performance on X, Modi wrote, “Indian music is getting very popular in Italy. During the community welcome in Rome last evening, five Italian artistes performed the Hamsadhwani. Compliments to Mr Valerio Bruni (Santoor), Mr Leo Vertunni (Sitar), Mr Simone Mattiello (Bansuri), Mr Francesco Gherardi (Tabla) and Mr Nicolo Mellochi (Bansuri).”
The artists also spoke about their brief interaction with Modi and said they were pleased to perform for him.
Francesco Gherardi said Modi appeared engaged throughout the performance.
“His participation was there; we could feel it. He was clapping during the performance and gave us a lot of good vibes. We were able to shake hands with him and also had nice pictures together,” he said.
Simone Mattiello described the event as joyful and said the Prime Minister appeared to connect with the musicians.
“Our performance was very joyful, and I think he connected with us. He clapped, so I think he enjoyed it,” Mattiello said.
Nicolo Melocchi called the performance a “great opportunity,” while Valerio Bruni said Modi seemed enthusiastic during the cultural presentation and appreciated the group’s efforts.
Modi arrived in Rome on Tuesday for the final leg of his five-nation tour. He was welcomed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. (Source: IANS)
