WORCESTER, MA—India Society of Worcester (ISW), one of the most active Indian community organizations in New England, will celebrate India Day on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, at DCU Center in Worcester.

The event, which is free to all attendees, will be held from Noon to 7:00 PM. It offers many opportunities to attendees to immerse themselves in Indian culture, said Balki Chandrakasan, Chair of ISW India Day 2023.

India Day was started by Dr. Sahdev Passey, MD more than 30 years ago, and every year it has attracted the community from surrounding areas. From vendors showcasing their products to delectable food options, captivating cultural performers, and family-friendly fun, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn from.

The festival holds special significance as it commemorates the 60th anniversary of ISW, and aligns with India’s Independence Day, which is celebrated annually on August 15 as a public holiday.

ISW was founded by a group of about 25 Indian residents, including the students in the area colleges and the research institutions.

For a number of years, ISW remained small and an informal group. Diwali, Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations were the main events of the organization.

The recent revival of strong interest in the Society occurred during the Massachusetts boom years starting with the years 1985-86. With the influx of several new Indian residents in the area, there was a strong desire to see ISW become a focal point in the Indian community, fulfilling its cultural and social needs. A number of successful programs and new activities put the Society on a strong footing.

ISW today is one of the most active Indian organizations in New England. In 1991, ISW reached another significant milestone. After many years of search, the India Center dream was established.

ISW acquired a 5-acre lot with existing buildings at a prime location in Shrewsbury, MA. ISW grew from a small colonial home, to a large  community center that fulfills a variety of objectives. including a cultural school, free health stop, and in 2021 the organization added 4,000 square feet and opened its new Community Hall with  a new focus on networking, women empowerment, culture and art, teaching and learning, and sport activities such as bridge, table tennis, outdoor hikes and chess.
