Calgary– Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an enthusiastic and heartfelt welcome from the Indian diaspora upon his arrival in Calgary, Canada, on Tuesday to attend the G7 Summit. The visit, at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, sparked a wave of celebration among Indo-Canadians, who turned out in large numbers to greet him.
Gathering outside the hotel where Modi is staying, supporters held signs reading “Welcome Modi Ji,” “Namaste Modi Ji, we are proud of you,” and “Jai Bharat, Jai Canada.” Many had waited for hours, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Indian leader.
“We’ve been here since morning, full of hope,” said one excited attendee. “We saw his plane land, and came straight here. We’ve been waiting just to see him.”
Describing the atmosphere, another member of the crowd said, “It’s like a festival for us. Calgary is in celebration mode. We’re welcoming world leaders—especially Prime Minister Modi—with open hearts.”
Others expressed optimism that Modi’s visit would help improve India-Canada relations, which have faced diplomatic strain in recent years. “We’re here at his temporary residence to show our support and welcome him,” said a community member.
One woman described the moment as deeply meaningful: “We’re thrilled to see Modi Ji. This is precious for us. We believe his voice at the G7 will have a strong impact, especially on Indian-Canadian relations.”
Shortly after landing, Prime Minister Modi posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South.”
During his visit, Modi is expected to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis. Key topics will likely include development cooperation, global economic challenges, and the interests of the Global South—a group of developing nations that India has consistently championed on the world stage.
