Indian Classical Dancer Ananda Shankar Jayant to Perform in Boston in February

CHELMSFORD, MA—Indian classical dancer Ananda Shankar Jayant will perform in Boston in February at a fundraising event for Maanavseva, an year-old non-profit organization that serves rural Indian women by educating and creating awareness and providing testing and screening facilities to fight against malignancies such as oral, cervical and breast cancers.

Jayant, a prolific soloist, performing in two classical Indian dance styles of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, has agreed to address event and perform a solo dance, organizers of the event said.

Jayant, who in 2007was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, serves as the Artistic Director of Shankarananda Kalakshetra. A TED speaker in 2009, Jayant’s TED talk is much viewed and is ranked as one of 12 incredible TED talks on cancer.

With an acclaimed and intense body of work that spans rich mythologies, historical chronicles, searing commentaries on topical issues, philosophical enquiry, poetry, storytelling, and humor, Jayant constantly stretches the boundaries of artistic endeavor, using the grammar and idiom of the classical dance format, making her presentations at once contemporary and evocative, according to her website.

Jayant holds a Masters degree in Ancient Indian History, a M.Phil in Art History and a Ph.D in Tourism. She actively lectures on breast cancer support and advocacy issues, having successfully battled the illness over the last two years.
