India Launches Digital Trade Portal to Boost U.S. Business Ties Toward $500 Billion Goal

NEW YORK — India has launched a new digital trade portal aimed at strengthening business ties with the United States and accelerating progress toward a $500 billion annual bilateral trade target, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said Wednesday.

Speaking at the launch of the India-U.S. Trade Facilitation Portal at India’s Consulate General in New York, Goyal described the partnership between the two countries as rooted in shared democratic values and driven by innovation and entrepreneurship.

“Forged on shared democratic values, fueled by entrepreneurial spirit and driven by unrelenting pursuit of innovation, our partnership is special,” he said.

In a video message from New Delhi, Goyal said bilateral trade is already expanding rapidly and emphasized that the $500 billion goal should benefit a broad range of stakeholders, including micro, small, and medium enterprises, farmers, and fishermen.

“Bilateral trade is growing rapidly towards the $500 billion ambition set by both sides, and this goal must also benefit MSMEs, our farmers, and our fishermen to become more inclusive,” he said.

He added that both countries must adapt to a rapidly changing global environment marked by digital transformation and the need for more resilient supply chains.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who inaugurated the platform remotely from Washington, said recent global disruptions — including the COVID-19 pandemic and shifting geopolitical dynamics — have underscored vulnerabilities in global trade systems while also creating new opportunities.

“The disruptions that all of you have been witnessing over the last several years have exposed vulnerabilities in the global economic and especially the trading makeup,” he said. “But just where there are vulnerabilities, there are also opportunities.”

Misri said the portal reflects a growing emphasis on trusted partnerships and reliable supply chains, providing a dedicated digital platform to facilitate trade between the two countries.

According to officials, the portal functions as a digital marketplace connecting Indian exporters with U.S. importers. It uses artificial intelligence to match businesses, offers advanced search tools, and provides a secure dashboard for tracking deals in real time.

The platform is expected to help Indian small and mid-sized businesses gain visibility among U.S. buyers, while also offering access to webinars and guidance on regulatory compliance. Companies will be able to engage with major U.S. retailers such as Walmart and Costco through the platform.

Misri highlighted the resilience of India-U.S. trade, noting that bilateral commerce reached a record $241 billion, marking the fourth consecutive year that the United States has been India’s largest trading partner.

“It’s remarkable that this growth has been achieved in the face of what I refer to as the volatility that we witnessed, both on the bilateral front, on account of issues to do with tariffs, but also on a more general front, due to the prevailing global economic volatility,” he said.

Recent trade tensions, including tariffs imposed during President Donald Trump’s trade policies, created uncertainty, though many of those measures were later reduced or struck down by U.S. courts.

India’s ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, said reaching the $500 billion trade milestone is a key part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047.

“Our effort today would not only contribute to achieving that mission of $500 billion [bilateral trade] but would also play a larger role in significantly adding to the economic gains that our economy would make,” he said.

Consul-General Binaya Srikanta Pradhan said businesses have already begun registering on the portal, with strong early interest from exporters and industry groups. He added that Indian consulates across the U.S. are planning virtual exhibitions and educational programs to support participation.

Later this month, the Indian consulate in Seattle will host a session featuring Costco to guide companies on how to join its supply chain, he said. (Source: IANS)
