“Hotel, Motel & Patel” Announced: New Comedy-Drama Explores the Indian Immigrant Dream in America
Filmmaker Mitesh Patel brings a personal, humor-filled story of NRI life to the screen, with Krishna Bharadwaj leading a cast rooted in cultural authenticity.

Los Angeles — A new feature film titled Hotel, Motel & Patel has been officially announced by award-winning filmmaker Mitesh Patel, promising a heartfelt blend of comedy and drama inspired by the real-life journeys of Indian immigrants in the United States.
The film draws from the history of Gujarati immigrants who helped establish the “Patel Motel” legacy—an economic and cultural phenomenon that traces back to the 1940s. It began when entrepreneur Kanji Manchhu Desai leased a small hotel in California, laying the groundwork for what would become a dominant presence of Indian-owned motels across the U.S.
Set in the present day, the story follows an ambitious Indian family that relocates to America in pursuit of opportunity, only to find themselves running a rundown motel in an unfamiliar environment. Through a series of comedic and emotional moments—ranging from difficult guests and cultural misunderstandings to chaotic family dynamics and unexpected friendships—the film captures both the struggle and spirit of immigrant life.
Blending humor with heartfelt storytelling, the film’s first half leans into colorful, comedic situations, while the latter half explores deeper themes of identity, belonging, and perseverance. Patel has described the project as deeply personal, reflecting his own journey after immigrating to North America and working in the motel industry, as well as the shared experiences of countless NRI families.
Television star Krishna Bharadwaj will play the lead role. Best known for his portrayal of Tenali Ramakrishna in the hit series Tenali Rama, Bharadwaj earned widespread recognition for his comic timing and expressive performances—qualities that position him as a natural fit for the film’s cross-cultural narrative.
The production also brings together an experienced creative team. Rakesh Shah, founder of RShah Entertainment, joins as associate producer, contributing his background in live events, film production, and global talent collaborations. Music will be composed by Smitt Jay, known for the 2025 Gujarati hit Laalo – Shree Krishna Sada Sahayate, with a style that blends traditional Indian elements and modern cinematic sound.
Acclaimed writer Vinay Dave has been signed on as lyricist. Based in Ahmedabad, Dave is recognized for his work across Gujarati and Hindi cinema, including My Dear Babuchak and Dikro Maro Vahal No Varasdar, and is known for combining cultural depth with mass appeal.
The screenplay will be written by veteran writer Pankaj Trivedi, whose credits include Apna Sapna Money Money, Hello Darling, and Run Bhola Run. His experience in comedy and commercial storytelling is expected to bring both humor and emotional balance to the project.
Currently in pre-production, Hotel, Motel & Patel is casting talent in both the United States and India, with filming scheduled to begin in July or August 2026 across multiple U.S. locations. The filmmakers are also collaborating closely with NRI communities to ensure authenticity.
In an effort to make the film a true community-driven project, the producers are inviting members of the Indian diaspora to get involved through acting opportunities, partnerships, production support, and investment participation. The goal, they say, is to create a film that not only tells the immigrant story—but is built with the voices of those who have lived it.
Additional casting announcements and production updates are expected in the coming months.
