CHICAGO, IL– Dr. Maya B. Shahani, a founding member of the Indian American Association of New England, was honored posthumously by the Craniofacial Center at the University of Illinois in Chicago during its 70th Anniversary Celebration.

In attendance at the event on Sept. 6 were several distinguished members of the UIC Medical Center and College of Medicine communities, visiting faculty, and former patients, many of whom shared their lifechanging experiences.

Despite her many professional and personal achievements, Dr. Shahani was soft-spoken and humble, and loved by her patients and community, alike.  She passed away on May 12 at the age of 82.  She was born in Karachi, pre-partition India, and resided for much of her life in Winchester, Massachusetts, while maintaining a home in Chicago, Illionois.

Dr. Shahani is survived by her husband, Dr. Bhagwan T. Shahani; her son, Robin B. Shahani; and her sister, Mala “Baby” Vaswani.

Dr. Mimis Cohen, Professor and Chief – Division of Plastic, Reconstruction and Cosmetic Surgery and Director of the Craniofacial Center, presented a commemorative plaque to Dr. Shahani’s family and, in an emotional tribute, noted that she “treated each patient as if they were her own child, taking all the time she needed to make each one feel special.”  The center had previously named its pediatric examination area for Dr. Shahani.

After completing medical school in Bombay, India and starting her career in New York City and Oxford, England, Dr. Maya Shahani completed her training in pediatrics at Beverly Hospital in Beverly, Massachusetts and Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

In addition to nearly two decades in private practice in the Boston area, she also served as the Head of Pediatric Rehabilitation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Shahani held the position of Associate Professor, UIC College of Medicine and Pediatrician at the Craniofacial Center for 25 years before retiring in 2015.  She published extensively in professional journals and frequently accepted visiting professor invitations to lecture at leading institutions across the United States and India.  Dr. Shahani was a Fellow of the Massachusetts Medical Society, as well as a founding member and former chairperson of the Indian Medical Association of New England.
