Five Soccer Icons Set for Likely Final FIFA World Cup Appearance

New Delhi — As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, fans are preparing for a tournament that could deliver unforgettable moments, dramatic finishes and the end of an era for some of soccer’s biggest names.

For several of the sport’s most celebrated players, the tournament is expected to be the final World Cup of careers that have inspired millions and helped define a generation. Some have already won the sport’s biggest prize, while others are still chasing the one trophy missing from their collections.

Here are five soccer legends who could be playing in their final FIFA World Cup.

Lionel Messi, Argentina

After leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, Lionel Messi is expected to return for one final appearance at the tournament.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner ended years of debate by lifting the trophy in Qatar. In 2026, he will have the chance to help Argentina become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title. Regardless of how far Argentina advances, Messi’s status as one of soccer’s greatest players is already secure.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal

Few athletes have redefined longevity like Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star has had an international career spanning more than two decades and remains one of his country’s most influential players.

The World Cup is the only major trophy missing from Ronaldo’s career, making 2026 likely his final chance to complete soccer’s ultimate achievement. At 41, he will enter the tournament knowing every match could be his last on the World Cup stage.

Luka Modric, Croatia

Luka Modric has become the symbol of Croatia’s rise as a soccer power. From leading his country to the 2018 World Cup final to another podium finish in 2022, the midfielder has consistently delivered in major tournaments.

Now 40, Modric remains Croatia’s leader and creative force. A strong run in 2026 would be a fitting farewell for one of the finest midfielders of his generation.

Thomas Muller, Germany

A World Cup winner in 2014 and one of Germany’s top tournament performers, Thomas Muller has built a reputation for delivering in big moments.

His intelligence, movement and ability to produce decisive plays have made him a fan favorite for more than a decade. As Germany looks to return to the top of world soccer, the 36-year-old will hope to close his World Cup career with one more memorable campaign.

Neymar, Brazil

Brazil forward Neymar has already indicated that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the last of his career. The 34-year-old made the remark in response to a FIFA social media post showing images from his career with the words, “We’ve watched him grow up.”

“The last dance,” the Santos attacker replied in the comments section.

Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 128 international matches, has not played for the national team since suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in October 2023. However, he has been included in the squad and will look to help Brazil pursue its sixth World Cup title, and its first in 24 years. (Source: IANS)
