Brangelina divorce leaves Hollywood, fans shocked
Los Angeles– Even as the guessing game is on as to what caused the split of Hollywood’s power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt — his marijuana and alcohol use, a possible affair with French actress Marion Cottilard or the irreconcilable differences that Jolie stated — members of the film fraternity and their fans across the globe have expressed shock, sadness and sarcasm.
They had been in a relationship for long, but wed in August 2014.
According to Hollywood news website TMZ, Jolie cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, and legal documents reveal she’s demanding physical custody of their six children, with visitation rights for Pitt.
“I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time,” Pitt said in a statement to People magazine.
If another TMZ report, quoting a source close to Pitt, is to be believed, he will fight hard for joint physical custody of the children.
Ever since the split news broke, hashtags #Brangelina, #Brangelexit, #Brangelinacheat and #BrangelinaBreakup started trending on Twitter. Their star friends, including George Clooney, have reacted.
“That’s a sad story and unfortunate for a family,” said Clooney.
On Twitter, one user rued: “I feel like my parents have split up Brangelina. Another “genuinely sad” user wrote: “They seemed more than happy, and so accepting and inclusive with their kids. Sad day. Brangelina.”
The couple met on the set of their spy thriller “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” in 2003, while Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston. He broke up with Aniston in 2005.
Later, Jolie revealed that it was Pitt’s relationship with her son Maddox, who had “out of the blue called him dad”, that encouraged their togetherness.
In July 2005, Jolie finalised the adoption of her second child, Zahara, from Ethiopia – as a single parent, and six months later, she revealed she was expecting her first child with Pitt, who also adopted Maddox and Zahara. Shiloh joined the expanding brood.
Less than one year later, the couple announced yet another bundle of joy — they adopted son Pax, then 3, from Vietnam.
The duo also took their children — Pax and Zahara — for a boat ride during their brief and highly publicised stay in the Indian city Mumbai in 2006, while Jolie was in India to shoot for Michael Winterbottom’s “A Mighty Heart”.
In February 2008, the couple confirmed that they were expecting a baby once again — and they happened to be twins. The family welcomed Knox and Vivienne in August 2008 in Nice, France. It was after welcoming their fifth and sixth children, the couple became slightly more public about their relationship.
Los Angeles– Actor George Clooney, who has worked with Pitt closely in “Ocean’s Eleven” and its sequels, told eonline.com: “I didn’t know that. I feel very sorry then. That’s a sad story and unfortunate for a family. It’s an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that.”
Oscar winning songstress Adele, who was performing at a concert in New York, said: “I’m dedicating this show tonight to them, I was shocked when I woke up this morning.”
Here are some of the reactions the celebrities gave on the split of Hollywood’s A-list couple:
Alyssa Milano: WTF? Brad and Angelina?!. I’m crushed.
Emily Blunt: It’s their business, and it’s not for anybody else to comment on.
Luke Evans: It’s very sad to hear.
Chrissy Teigen: Brad and Angelina. How am I supposed to go to work today?
Questlove: Everyone is serious as a heart attack with this ‘I might actually have a chance! Talk Brangelina.
Josh Gad: Before we get too cavalier about it, let’s remember that Brangelina was possibly the only thing still holding the USA together.
Colin Jost: Holy shit someone explain this Jolie-Pitt divorce in terms of skittles because I don’t understand it.
Spencer Pratt: I feel bad for kids that aren’t gonna get adopted by Brangelina now.
Patton Oswalt: Tower of Terror! Eggo! Skittles! Brad Pitt! I don’t know why any of them are trending, but I’m running to my basement. It’s over.
Boy George: It’s sad about Brad and Angelina, but it’s also none of our business!
Pitt-Jolie divorce becomes fodder for late night shows’ hosts
Los Angeles– Jimmy Kimmel and James Cordon, hosts of late night chat shows, took potshots at the divorce news of Hollywood’s power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
On Tuesday, after Jolie announced the news of her split with Pitt after being together for more than a decade, it gave enough fodder for social media to crack jokes or grieve over the split.
Kimmel showed several tabloid covers during his opening monologue on his show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
“There are a lot of important and life-threatening and world changing things going on lately; sometimes it seems like more than ever. But none of them are as foundation shaking as the news we received about Brad and Angelina today,” the comedian joked, reports eonlione.com.
“As I’m sure you’ve heard, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, and of course, all the celebrity gossip magazines are claiming victory. You know, they broke this story. They broke this story every week for the last 11 years over and over and over again-until finally, it came true,” he added.
“While it’s ‘sad news’ for Brangelina, it’s also ‘great news’ for Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift , who now don’t have to be on those covers anymore. Apparently the reason they’re getting divorced is she talked about fight club, and Pitt specifically asked her not to do that.
“Now that this has happened, you wonder what else the tabloids have been right about. Are Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez back together? Was Kim Kardashian dumped on her first anniversary? Is Barack Obama gay? I mean, he must be; they wouldn’t put it on the cover if it wasn’t true. Anyway, our thoughts are with Brad and Angelina, and with all of us. It’s always hard when two people you don’t know and have no personal connection to split up,” Kimmel added.
Jimmy Fallon’s Brangelina mention was brief.
“Here’s what everyone is talking about — it’s kind of sad news: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are separating. It’s pretty scary when even Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are like, ‘Eh, I could do better,” he said on his show “The Tonight Show”.
Similarly, Conan O’Brien kept his Brangelina coverage to a minimum on his show, saying: “The big story today is celebrity news… Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are getting a divorce. They’ll share custody 50-50: He’ll take 50 kids, she’ll take the other 50.”
Corden spoke of the A-list couple’s breakup, joking that it was “perhaps the most troubling news story” of the day.
“It came out that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are filing for divorce and will end their relationship of 12 years. I’m taking this news especially hard because I named my daughter Brangelina. It feels like a mistake now,” Corden joked on “The Late Late Show”.
Madame Tussauds separates Pitt, Jolie’s wax figures
London–World famous waxwork museum Madame Tussauds has placed actors Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s figures separately after news of their split emerged.
“Following the news that has shocked celebrity watchers worldwide, we can confirm we have separated Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s figures,” read a post from the official Twitter handle of Madame Tussauds on Wednesday.
In an accompanying image with the post, “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson’s figure seems to have been placed in between Pitt and Jolie’s artworks.
The waxwork museum later confirmed Jolie had been moved to keep Nicole Kidman company and Pitt’s figure was next to his “Seven” co-star Morgan Freeman.
The now estranged couple’s waxworks were unveiled in 2013 to mark Pitt’s 50th birthday.
“We reacted quickly to yesterday’s (Tuesday) news of the separation of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and their plans to divorce by mirroring the separation in the attraction.
“The couple’s wax figures, which were launched in 2013, have been split up and are now featured at a respectful distance from each other,” dailymail.co.uk quoted a spokesperson as saying.
The Hollywood couple, known collectively as Brangelina, married in 2014. On Tuesday, it was revealed that Jolie had filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.
