BURLINGTON, MA—Asha Dixit is one of the first Indian-American women CEOs in the country who is running an accounting firm with about 20 employees. “Women are certainly rising quickly through the ranks of businesses, and women-owned businesses continue to thrive,” she says.
Dixit is Chief Executive Officer of Burlington, MA-based Shah, Dixit & Associates P.C., a full service accounting firm focused on tax, accounting and consulting services to small and medium-sized businesses, professionals, and tax-exempt organizations in the New England area.
“We also provide individual tax return and tax planning services to high net worth individuals,” Dixit told INDIA New England News. “We also specialize in international taxation for individuals and businesses and have considerable experience with the various filing requirements.”
Shah, Dixit & Associates was founded by the late Chandrakant Shah in 1991. Dixit joined the firm as a junior associate in 1993 and worked with Shah for five years before moving to a national accounting firm in Boston. She returned to Shah, Dixit & Associates in 2004 as a partner.
Dixit has over 21 years of experience in public accounting, serving clients in manufacturing, biotech, hi-tech, construction, health services, real estate, retail, food and hospitality, non-profits, and professional service firms. In addition, Dixit advises corporations and individuals on issues related to international taxation, new ventures, acquisitions, and growth strategies.
Dixit also frequently represents clients during Internal Revenue Service and state government audits. She holds an MBA and MS in Computer Information Systems from the Southern New Hampshire University and B.Com. (Honors) from Osmania University in India.
What brought Dixit, who was born in Hyderabad, to the United States?
“After completing my undergraduate studies in Hyderabad, I decided to travel to the US for my graduate studies in New Hampshire,” said Dixit.
Although Dixit has all types of clients, a number of her customers include women and women-owned businesses.
“Among my clients are several successful women who manage their own businesses. Their effort and drive are reflected in the success their businesses enjoy, and they do a great job balancing work and family,” said Dixit. “Over the course of my career, I have seen an increasing number of women start successful companies and am sure this trend will continue.”
What is her advice to people who want to start their own business but are hesitant to do so?
“We are in an economic climate that continues to support the development of small businesses. I would encourage hesitant entrepreneurs to act upon their ideas and take advantage of the growth happening in the New England region,” Dixit said. “We are seeing tremendous strides from the businesses and innovations in our area, which present opportunities for both established as well as new businesses.”
