Indian Stock Markets Close Lower as Auto and Banking Shares Help Limit Losses

MUMBAI–Indian stock markets ended lower Wednesday, with the benchmark Sensex falling 353 points as weakness in technology and energy shares outweighed gains in automobile and banking stocks.
The Sensex recovered from a sharp decline earlier in the session but still closed at 73,246, down 353 points. The index had fallen to an intraday low of 72,604 before buying interest in select stocks helped reduce its losses.
The broader Nifty 50 index followed a similar pattern, recovering from an intraday low of 22,498 to close at 22,699, a decline of 51 points.
The market’s partial recovery was driven primarily by renewed investor interest in automobile companies and select banking stocks during the second half of trading.
Among major Nifty constituents, Infosys, Reliance Industries and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) were the leading decliners, putting pressure on the benchmark indices.
In contrast, Larsen & Toubro, Apollo Hospitals, Trent and SBI Life Insurance were among the session’s top gainers, helping cushion the overall market decline.
Despite weakness in the benchmark indices, shares of mid-sized and smaller companies performed better.
The Nifty Midcap index rose 0.5%, while the Nifty SmallCap index gained 0.8%, indicating continued buying interest beyond the market’s largest companies.
Automobile stocks recorded the strongest sectoral performance, with the Nifty Auto index advancing 1.5%.
Banking shares also attracted buyers, lifting the Bank Nifty index by 0.5%.
However, selling pressure in technology and energy stocks prevented the broader market from moving into positive territory.
The Nifty IT and Nifty Oil & Gas indices each declined approximately 2%, while the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) index slipped 0.6%.
Market analysts said the Nifty remains in a consolidation phase, trading within a relatively narrow range as investors assess market conditions.
“Key support is placed at 22,500, where solid buying interest repeatedly emerges, while 22,800 acts as formidable resistance after the index failed to hold 22,700 during market hours,” analysts stated.
The 22,500 level is viewed as an important support point, while 22,800 remains a key resistance level that the index has struggled to surpass.
Analysts said the rebound from the day’s lows demonstrated buying interest in selected sectors despite broader market weakness.
They also suggested that longer-term investors could use periods of market volatility to evaluate investment opportunities in fundamentally strong companies.
“For long-term investors, the focus can gradually shift from managing near-term volatility to selectively accumulating quality businesses at attractive valuations,” analysts noted.
Wednesday’s trading session highlighted the contrasting performance of different sectors, with gains in automobiles and banking helping stabilize the market even as technology and energy stocks dragged down the major indices. (Source: IANS)
