Guinness World Records Recognises World’s Longest Biography of BAPS Founder Pramukh Swami Maharaj

13-volume biography of the late spiritual leader spans 8,848 pages and more than 2.1 million words, earning recognition as the Longest Biography by a Single Author

LONDON— A monumental 13-volume biography documenting the life and legacy of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, founder of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the Longest Biography by a Single Author.

Written by Sanskrit scholar Sadhu Adarshjivandas, PhD, Brahmaswarup Pramukh Swami Maharaj: Vistrut Jivan ane Karya comprises 8,848 pages and 2,146,447 words, making it one of the most extensive single-author biographical works ever produced.

The Guinness World Records certificate was presented to His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj at OVO Arena Wembley on October 4, during celebrations marking his 93rd birth anniversary. The presentation was witnessed by approximately 11,000 people at the arena, while tens of thousands more followed the event through a live webcast around the world.

A 38-month undertaking

The biography chronicles the 94-year life of Pramukh Swami Maharaj (1921–2016), the late spiritual leader of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. It traces his journey from his birth in 1921 through his spiritual leadership and decades of service, to his passing in 2016.

Across its 13 volumes, the work documents Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s spirituality, humility, selfless service and commitment to the wellbeing of individuals and communities across the globe.

The monumental research and writing project was completed over an intensive 38-month period, from July 2017 to August 2020.

The scale of the undertaking reflects an effort not only to chronicle the life of a prominent spiritual figure, but also to preserve an extensive historical record for future generations.

Guinness recognises an extraordinary achievement

Carl Saville, Senior Adjudicator for Guinness World Records, presented the certificate during the Wembley ceremony.

“Today’s presentation for the Longest Biography by a Single Author has been a true pleasure, privilege and honour to deliver on behalf of Guinness World Records,” Saville said.

He noted that the organisation’s purpose is to document remarkable achievements from around the world, adding that the record was particularly fitting given the extraordinary scale and lifetime significance of the subject.

For author Sadhu Adarshjivandas, however, the achievement belongs first and foremost to the person whose life he chronicled.

“The subject of this biography is infinitely more important than the author,” he said.

“His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj lived a life defined by deep spirituality, profound humility and an unwavering commitment to global harmony, compassion and empathy. It was an honour and a privilege to chronicle his divine life and enduring legacy.”

More than a record

The biography’s significance extends beyond its sheer literary scale. The 13-volume work serves as an extensive archive of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life, teachings and service, preserving accounts of his interactions with individuals and communities around the world.

More than 310,000 copies of the volumes have already been sold, underscoring the work’s reach and continuing interest in Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life and legacy.

The record also highlights the growing body of cultural and educational achievements associated with BAPS.

In February 2026, another BAPS initiative set a Guinness World Records title when 12,723 children in Vadodara, India, participated in a simultaneous recital of Sanskrit verses from the Satsang Diksha scripture. The gathering established the record for the Largest Simultaneous Hindu Text Recital.

As part of the wider initiative, more than 15,000 children had memorised all 315 Sanskrit verses of the scripture.

Together, the two achievements reflect the scale of initiatives undertaken to preserve, teach and share spiritual and cultural traditions with new generations.

For the biography of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the Guinness World Records recognition marks the culmination of years of research and writing—and a formal acknowledgement of an extraordinary literary effort dedicated to documenting a life centred on spirituality, service and the welfare of others.
