Face-to-Face: Girish Satpute on “Melodies for Hope” Benefit Concert for Orphaned Youth
The Oct. 3 concert in Framingham will bring together Indian and Boston-area musicians to raise funds for A Future for Every Child, helping vulnerable young adults in India build independent futures.
FRAMINGHAM, MA — An evening of Indian classical and semi-classical music will bring together musicians from India and Boston on Oct. 3 for a benefit concert supporting young people who have aged out of orphanages and other child-care institutions in India.
“Melodies for Hope: A Benefit Concert for Orphaned Youth” will be held at the Keefe Tech Auditorium, 750 Winter Street, Framingham, and will raise funds for A Future for Every Child (AFEC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to help orphaned and vulnerable young adults build independent and productive lives.
The concert will feature Indian vocalist Supriyo Dutta, joined by a group of Boston-area musicians: Phil Scarff on saxophone, Amit Kavthekar on tabla, Isabel Castellvi on cello and Marc Rossi on piano. Jawed Wahid will provide light and sound for the program.
The event is being organized around a simple but urgent need. Every year in India, nearly 50,000 young people age out of Child Care Institutions, commonly known as orphanages. More than half are girls. When they turn 18, they are required to leave the only homes many of them have known, often without family support, vocational training or the financial means to establish independent lives.
AFEC works to address that transition by providing education, life skills, vocational training and ongoing support to help these young adults become financially self-reliant.
“Melodies for Hope” seeks to combine music and philanthropy in support of that mission. The program will bring together the sounds of Indian classical and semi-classical music with Western instruments, creating a musical collaboration that reflects the diverse backgrounds of the performers.
An evening of music and community
Check-in begins at 4 p.m., with light refreshments available until 4:45 p.m. The concert begins promptly at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m.
Attendees will also have an opportunity to win door prizes, including a NIRA Skincare Laser and an Oxiwear Continuous Oxygen Monitor.
The event is also an opportunity for the Boston-area Indian American and broader community to learn more about the challenges faced by young people leaving institutional care in India and the efforts underway to help them establish independent futures.
