Jameela Jamil Criticizes Botox Trend, Says She Misses ‘Faces That Move’
Mumbai — British actress Jameela Jamil has criticized the widespread use of Botox and cosmetic injectables, saying she misses seeing natural facial expressions and believes the trend is diminishing emotional authenticity.
In a lengthy Instagram post, Jamil said she has become increasingly distracted by what she described as frozen expressions among women and actors on screen.
“I can’t look at Botoxed faces anymore. I miss the faces that move. I miss women frowning and laughing without it looking painful,” she wrote.
Jamil, who is in her 40s, said many of her peers have embraced cosmetic procedures and that she misses seeing what she called greater “facial freedom.”
“My peers are injecting all the wild out of themselves and I miss it. I miss it terribly,” she wrote. “I’m so sorry. I don’t mean this with judgement or to offend. I just miss the facial freedom of women.”
The actress also argued that cosmetic treatments can reinforce restrictive beauty standards for women.
“Botox is a prison that presents as stoicism in a time women should be fucking ROARING,” she wrote, adding that women should not feel pressured to take risks with their appearance or health to meet beauty expectations.
Jamil said she also finds it increasingly difficult to watch television without noticing what she considers a loss of expressiveness among performers.
“I can’t watch TV anymore without being distracted by how expressionless my favourite actors have become,” she wrote. “It’s too much. We have lost a grip on reality. Emotion is POWER.”
In the caption accompanying the post, Jamil also suggested that increasingly uniform and less expressive faces could make it easier for artificial intelligence to replicate women in entertainment and online.
“I truly believe this is a ploy to make it so easy to replace women with AI on screen and online,” she wrote. “It’s easy to replicate a motionless face that looks like every other face. It’s already happening.”
Jamil began her career as a television and radio presenter in Britain before gaining international recognition for playing Tahani Al-Jamil in the NBC fantasy comedy series “The Good Place.” (Source: IANS)
