Sonu Nigam Reconnects With Haryanvi Roots Through New Song ‘Chunni’
Mumbai — Singer Sonu Nigam says his latest Haryanvi song, “Chunni,” gave him an opportunity to reconnect with his roots and his family’s long association with Haryana.
Nigam said Faridabad holds special significance for him because he was born there, his sister was also born there and his father spent his childhood in the city.
“Whichever place God chooses for us as our birthplace, there must be a reason behind it. There must be some connection,” Nigam said. “So, out of all the places I got the great fortune to be born in Faridabad, Haryana. My sister was also born there, and my father’s entire childhood was spent in Faridabad. So, naturally, Haryana is an extremely special state for us.”
The singer said he was also exposed to Haryanvi while growing up because many of his school friends spoke the language.
“Back in school days, a lot of my friends were also Haryanvi, so we grew up hearing the Haryanvi language a lot. We were always able to understand the language, but did not use to speak it much,” he said.
Nigam added that recording “Chunni” required him to pay particular attention to pronunciation and delivery. He turned to lyricist and composer Aamin Barodi for guidance on getting the language right.
“For the song, we were required to speak the language in a proper manner. Aamin Barodi, who has written the lyrics of the track, he has great knowledge of music, along with a good thought process. So I requested him to help me with the details,” Nigam said.
