AAPICON 2027 Launches at Kickoff Gala in Oak Brook
OAK BROOK, Ill. — The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) officially launched AAPICON 2027 during a kickoff gala in Oak Brook, Illinois, bringing together physicians, elected officials and community members to begin planning for the national convention.
In her keynote address, AAPI President Dr. Meher Medavaram outlined priorities for the 2027 convention, including scientific education, physician wellness, mentorship, global health initiatives and community service.
U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi addressed attendees, encouraging Indian American physicians to become more engaged in civic life.
Oak Brook Mayor Larry Herman presented a proclamation recognizing AAPI as a national organization representing more than 100,000 physicians, residents, fellows and medical students. He also noted that Oak Brook has served as AAPI’s headquarters for more than 30 years and has been home to three national AAPI presidents: Dr. Gopal Lalmalani, Dr. Suresh Reddy and Dr. Meher Medavaram.
Mayor Herman and Village Manager Greg Summers presented Medavaram with the Key to the Village of Oak Brook in recognition of AAPI’s contributions to the community.
Convention Chair Dr. Umang Patel, Convention Convener Dr. Utpal Parikh, Senior Advisor Dr. Bharat Barai and Treasurer Dr. Sujeeth Punnam outlined plans for organizing the 2027 convention, including committee coordination, fundraising and attendance goals.
Medavaram also thanked Dr. Mohan Kesani, regional director for AAPI’s Northeast Central Region, and Harish Kolasani of India Hub for their support. Members of the Indiana Medical Association attended the event and expressed interest in participating in convention planning.
The gala was attended by several past AAPI leaders, including Dr. Ranga Reddy, Dr. Ashok Fulambakar, Dr. Vemuri Murthy, Dr. V.K. Raju, Dr. Gopal Lalmalani and Dr. Suresh Reddy, along with physicians from the Chicago area.
During the program, Lalmalani spoke about milestones in AAPI’s history, including relocating the organization’s headquarters to Oak Brook, while Reddy highlighted Oak Brook’s long association with the organization.
The evening also included performances of the U.S. and Indian national anthems by Dr. Radhika Chimata.
