Indian-American Golfers Bhatia, Theegala Lead Challenge at Colonial

FORT WORTH, Texas — Indian-American golfers Akshay Bhatia and Sahith Theegala will carry high expectations this week as they compete in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club.
With golfers of Indian origin making a growing impact on the PGA Tour, attention will be on the two Hero-backed players as they try to contend in a strong field at one of the tour’s most historic events.
Bhatia, already a three-time PGA Tour winner at 24, arrives at Colonial looking to regain the form that helped him win a Signature event earlier this season. His recent results have been less consistent, but the left-hander remains one of the tour’s most exciting young players and has shown an ability to respond quickly after difficult stretches.
Bhatia has had mixed results at Colonial, with one top-25 finish in three previous starts. Still, the course’s demanding layout could favor his creative shot-making if he finds his rhythm early. His aggressive style and confidence under pressure make him a threat when he is playing near his best.
Theegala is still seeking his second PGA Tour title after his breakthrough victory in 2023. The Californian has remained a regular presence near leaderboards over the past two seasons and has become one of the tour’s most popular players because of his fearless and attacking style.
Theegala has delivered several strong performances this year without closing out a victory. His all-around game appears well-suited for Colonial’s classic layout, where precision and imagination often matter more than power.
Indo-Canadian golfer Sudarshan Yellamaraju is also in the field. His rise has become one of the more encouraging stories among golfers of Indian origin. The self-taught professional impressed with a top-10 finish at The Players Championship earlier this season and will look to build on that result against another elite field.
Indo-British golfer Aaron Rai is sitting out this week after his PGA Championship victory at Aronimink.
The Charles Schwab Challenge, now in its 80th edition at Colonial, has drawn several major names, including Ludvig Åberg, Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Russell Henley and defending champion Ben Griffin.
Åberg enters after another strong major showing at the PGA Championship, where he tied for fourth. The Swede has been one of the PGA Tour’s most consistent players this season, with six top-10 finishes in his past seven starts.
Thomas returns to Colonial for the first time since 2022 after also tying for fourth at the PGA Championship. Griffin, meanwhile, is trying to become the first player to successfully defend the Colonial title since Ben Hogan in the 1950s.
With a prestigious title, FedExCup points and Memorial Tournament qualification spots at stake, Bhatia, Theegala and Yellamaraju will look to make their mark during a competitive week in Fort Worth. (Source: IANS)
