Somnath Temple Reconstruction Marks 75 Years

GANDHINAGAR, India — Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday marked the 75th anniversary of the reconstruction and inauguration of the Somnath Temple, calling the milestone a symbol of India’s cultural resurgence.

In a post on X, Patel said the temple’s modern reconstruction began with a commitment made by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel after independence.

“75 years ago, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had taken the resolve for the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the sacred site is now witnessing a renewed phase of India’s cultural resurgence,” Patel said.

He also urged citizens to take part in commemorative events marking 75 years of Somnath’s restored legacy.

The Somnath Temple, located in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district, is one of India’s most prominent Hindu pilgrimage sites. The temple has been rebuilt several times over the centuries and holds major religious and cultural significance.

Its modern reconstruction was initiated after India’s independence, with Sardar Patel supporting the effort through a public trust model. The reconstructed temple was completed and inaugurated in May 1951 by then-President Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Historical accounts link the post-independence rebuilding effort to Patel, who backed the creation of a trust to oversee reconstruction and public fundraising for the project.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Somnath on May 11 to attend events connected to the 75th anniversary of the temple’s reconstruction. His visit is expected to include religious and ceremonial programs at the temple complex.

Modi has taken part in several Somnath-related events in recent years. Earlier this year, he participated in programs highlighting the temple’s historical and cultural importance and described Somnath as “a symbol of resilience and continuity in India’s civilisational history.”

The 75-year milestone is being observed as part of broader commemorations focused on the temple’s reconstruction, heritage preservation and cultural revival. (Source: IANS)
