Video Interview: Filmmaker Bharatbala Ganapathy on “The India Experience” and the Virtual Bharat Film Project

BOSTON–A curated selection of films from the sweeping cultural archive Virtual Bharat is being presented across the United States as part of a special screening event titled “The India Experience,” highlighting stories drawn from across India’s diverse traditions, arts and communities.

The program features six short documentary films selected from the larger Virtual Bharat initiative led by filmmaker Bharatbala Ganapathy, who has launched an ambitious effort to create a 1,000-film digital archive documenting India’s living heritage. The project aims to capture stories from across the country through visually rich, short-form documentaries focused on art, culture, folklore, poetry and the performing arts.

Virtual Bharat, available through its digital platform, seeks to preserve and share India’s cultural traditions for future generations while introducing global audiences to the depth and diversity of the country’s heritage.

Ganapathy describes the initiative in his bio as “a 1,000 film digital archive that presents India’s ancient legacy and living traditions through short, immersive films.” So far, more than 50 films from 11 Indian states have been released, collectively generating hundreds of millions of views on social media platforms.

The filmmaker, who has spent more than three decades working in film, advertising and documentary storytelling, is widely known for projects that connect India’s culture with global audiences. Over the course of his career, he has directed more than 500 commercials, documentaries and films, including the landmark visual project for Vande Mataram and the collaborative musical film built around India’s national anthem Jana Gana Mana.

Ganapathy has frequently collaborated with composer A. R. Rahman, including the widely recognized music video for Maa Tujhe Salaam, which remains one of the most iconic modern patriotic songs in India.

His documentary work has also taken on global themes. In Gurus of Peace, Ganapathy brought together world leaders including Nelson Mandela, Tenzin Gyatso, Shimon Peres, Mikhail Gorbachev and Desmond Tutu in a project inspired by the philosophy of nonviolence championed by Mahatma Gandhi.

His feature film debut Hari Om, later released internationally as Soulmates, screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2004 and went on to win eight international Audience Choice Awards. His second feature, Maryan, starring Dhanush and Parvathy Thiruvothu, was praised for its emotional storytelling and music.

Ganapathy is currently completing his latest film, Khoj, shot during the Maha Kumbh Mela and in the historic city of Varanasi. The film tells the story of a woman searching for missing loved ones, exploring themes of family, loss and redemption through music and human connection.

Through Virtual Bharat and projects like The India Experience, Ganapathy continues to pursue what he describes as a lifelong goal: bringing “India’s spirit and cultural identity to the global stage.”
