AMRITSAR– Punjab Police have detained an unemployed software engineer in connection with a series of bomb threats targeting the Golden Temple in Amritsar, authorities said Friday.
Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Bhullar confirmed that Shubham Dubey was taken into custody in Faridabad for allegedly sending threatening emails warning of RDX bomb blasts at the sacred Sikh shrine. Bhullar stated that the investigation is at “an advanced stage,” and two First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed in the case.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which oversees Sikh religious affairs and manages gurdwaras including the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), received multiple threatening emails beginning July 14.
SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami said the committee has received five bomb threats to date, prompting heightened security across the temple complex.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held a high-level meeting with senior officials, including Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, to review the situation. In a post on X following the meeting, Mann emphasized that the state would not compromise on security.
“We will not allow any compromise on the security of Punjab. Our security agencies and the Punjab Police are fully alert,” he wrote. “I appeal to the people of Punjab to be cautious of rumors. All religious places are sacred and revered by us. We are fully committed to their security. Anti-national and anti-social forces will be dealt with utmost strictness.”
In response to the threats, local authorities have deployed Bomb Disposal Squads, SGPC task force members, and additional police personnel at the Golden Temple to safeguard worshippers and maintain order.
Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan condemned the bomb threats, stating that those behind them aim to disturb communal harmony and incite fear among the public.
“Miscreants want to disturb the communal harmony in Punjab and spread fear among people,” he said in a statement. “Terrorism has no religion and they will not be spared in their nefarious activities. The government has adopted a zero-tolerance approach toward such elements.” (Source: IANS)
